About

Behold the Beauty of Palm Jumeirah

A true sight to behold, many consider this man-made Dubai landmark the 8th wonder of the world. An artificial island and wildly ambitious real estate project, Palm Jumeirah is truly a magnificent work of art and feat of engineering. Measuring 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers in size, the earthworks sculpture is actually an artificial archipelago, as it consists of multiple interconnected islands forming the shape of a palm tree, enwreathed with a crescent. It is one of only a few man-made features visible from space.

Sea Life and the Artificial Reef

Nakheel, the property development company behind Palm Jumeirah, is the only of its kind in the Gulf that employs full-time environmental researchers to ensure marine life is not harmed by the artificial reef. In fact, they are establishing Blue Communities, an initiative to standardize coastal development.

FAQs

  • What exactly is Palm Jumeirah?

Many consider Palm Jumeirah to be the 8th wonder of the world. As a visionary real estate project with resorts, homes and seaside condos, it is a 5kilometers-by-5kilometers artificial island in the shape of a palm tree, expanding Dubai’s coastline as an earthworks art piece that can be seen from outer space.
  • How was it built?

A breakwater was constructed from mountain rocks along the crescent surrounding the palm. The seafloor sand at its underwater base is "vibro-compacted" and covered in a special layer of an erosion preventing material, with large stones up to 6 tons each stacked upon it. A pair of openings in the crescent allows the water to flow through the structure completely every 13 days, keeping it fresh and clean.
